PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT ADVISING ISLANDERS TO TAKE PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES

* Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour [to Jan 2010]
The Prince Edward Island Office of Public Safety is advising the public to take precautionary measures in preparation for an impending potentially dangerous storm.

There are indications that this weather event is extremely variable and that it is apparently increasing in intensity. The storm has the potential to be regarded as a hurricane.

Low-lying coastal areas may experience flooding due to storm surge.

The current weather forecasts display similarities to the forecasts prior to Hurricane Juan. Islanders are advised to secure movable objects outside and around homes, move vehicles away from large trees, and ensure sump pumps are in good working order. Ensure you have on hand sufficient potable water, flashlights, portable radios, batteries, and other necessities.

Refer to the 72 Hour Guide - which was delivered to all Island households in May - for emergency kit checklists. The emergency preparedness guide can be downloaded www.peiemo.ca, click on 72 Hours.

Monitor local media for current weather conditions, emergency notifications and information from local officials and follow their instructions.
