The provincial government today unveiled the details of a new initiative designed to increase computer usage and Internet access for Islanders. The Computer and Home Internet Purchase Project (CHIPP) offers an incentive to people buying a home computer between November 10, 1997, and February 10, 1998.
"It is said that by the year 2000, 90 percent of all jobs will require the use of a computer," said Pat Binns, Premier of Prince Edward Island. "PEI is among the lowest in Canada in home computer use. Less than 25 percent of Island homes currently have computers. This initiative will provide Islanders with the opportunity to access more knowledge and to become more employable in the future."
During the eligibility period, a rebate equivalent to 10 percent of eligible costs (up to a maximum of $250) will be provided to Islanders who buy an Internet-ready home computer for non-commercial use from an Island vendor. This can include software, a printer or other related hardware, if purchased as part of a package.
"We see this program as an investment in our future," added Wes MacAleer, Minister of Economic Development and Tourism. "This program continues to honor our commitment to information technology as a primary focus of our economic development strategy."
"All our schools now have access to the Internet and as a government we have already made a significant investment in bringing Islanders into the information technology age with the establishment of province-wide Community Access Sites," said Chester Gillan, Minister of Education. "By investing in technology in the home, a world of opportunity is open to Islanders, including access to world wide information and distance learning so essential in today's knowledge economy."
The rebate also applies to the purchase of Internet connection packages for existing home computers. Packages must include a network connection device and may also include the necessary software, computer memory upgrades and other related hardware.
Application forms will be available at all Island stores where computers are sold, Regional Service Centres and from Island Internet service providers. For information, Islanders can contact CHIPP at (902) 368-5926 or toll-free at 1-888-910-CHIP (2447).
