TPW Recognizes National Trucking Week

This week, Canada’s 400,000 truckers are celebrating National Trucking Week 2007. The week is meant to recognize the importance of the men and women who keep Canada’s freight moving. It’s also meant to remind truckers about the importance of proper safety and maintenance practices. Provincial trucking associations, carriers, industry suppliers and other stakeholders have been marking the event with newspaper supplements, radio ads, contests, special promotions and events at truck stops and roadside inspection stations.

“Truckers are the backbone of some of Prince Edward Island’s most important industries,” says Minister of Transportation and Public Works Ron MacKinley. “Agriculture and the fishery are especially dependant on truckers to move freight all over North America in a timely and safe manner. On behalf of the Department of Transportation and Public Works, I would like to congratulate the Island’s truckers on the great service they provide this province.”

According to the most recent statistics, close to 2700 Islanders are employed in the trucking and warehousing industry and demand keeps growing for qualified people.

“Demand will continue to grow for skilled, qualified people to work in Careers in the Trucking Industry,” says Heather MacLean, Executive Director of the PEI Trucking Sector Council. “During this week of celebration, we applaud the current workforce for a job well done and we encourage career seekers to take a look at this essential and growing industry.”
