At the end of August, members of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, along with members of the Prince Edward Island Department of Transportation and Public Works Highway Safety Division and local trucking associations, conducted inspections on truck brake units at the Borden-Carleton weigh station as part of Brake Safety Week. Of 262 brake units checked, only 6 were found to be out of adjustment.

“We’re very pleased to see that truckers in this region take good maintenance and safety seriously,” says Minister of Transportation and Public Works Ron MacKinley. ”Keeping our Island roads safe is my department’s number one priority, and events like this are a great addition to our safety campaign.”

Brake Safety Week is an annual event that focusses on enhancing knowledge, regulatory compliance and performance of commercial vehicle braking systems. The event aims to help reduce the number of highway crashes caused by faulty braking systems. Officials carried out inspections with the drivers to educate them on proper inspection procedure and proper operation.

“It was a great event that really demonstrated the spirit of cooperation between the Industry and Highway Safety to ensure we have safe Island roadways,” says Heather MacLean, Executive Director of the PEI Trucking Sector Council. “The exceptional airbrake safety results clearly indicate that PEI has a safe and viable trucking industry that understands the responsibility of sharing its workspace with all Islanders.”
