Beverley A. Brister of Springbrook, Prince Edward Island has been recognized as the winner of the second annual Premier’s Award for Craft Education.
Premier Robert Ghiz congratulated Ms. Brister at the Prince Edward Island Women’s Institute Handcrafts and Arts Division of the Provincial Exhibition.
Ms. Brister was selected by a panel of judges of the PEI Women’s Institute Exhibition Committee. Her chosen craft is hardanger embroidery, a Norwegian embroidery technique using counted thread and thread work techniques.
The Premier’s Award for Craft Education is presented annually to an exhibitor who embraces skill and proficiency in a chosen craft and shares that experience with others. The 2007 recipient is awarded a $3,000 bursary to attend a short course or seminar to allow further training in hardanger embroidery.
After completing a course, the recipient is required to submit a report to the exhibition committee outlining the learning experience, thereby passing on knowledge and experience gained to others involved in the craft industry.
This year’s Handcraft and Arts Exhibition at Old Home Week featured more than 1,000 entries from over 200 exhibitors. Approximately 250 volunteers participated in this year’s event at the Charlottetown Civic Centre.
