July 24, 2007 * Transportation and Public Works [to Jan 2010]A solution has been found which will give approval to existing charitable road tolls once they’ve been approved by their respective municipal councils. However, in making the announcement, Minister of Transportation and Public Works, Ron MacKinley, stressed that safety cannot and will not be compromised. The Highway Traffic Act allows the Minister to give special permission to charitable groups whose municipal councils have approved charitable road tolls within their boundaries. Minister MacKinley has already approved a road toll for the O’Leary Potato Blossom Festival to be held this weekend. Minister MacKinley said that road tolls should be conducted in as safe a manner possible, with traffic controls in place. All steps should be taken to ensure the safety of those conducting the road toll and the safety of other road users. “Safety cannot be compromised,” says MacKinley. “It’s my hope that safety will be the first consideration when municipal councils consider applications to hold these road tolls.”Media Contact: Andrew Sprague
