Transportation and Public Works Offers New French-Language Plates

The Government of Prince Edward Island is committed to improving service to French-speaking Islanders. That’s why this week the Department of Transportation and Public Works, Highway Safety Division, began offering new French-language license plates at all Access PEI locations. These French-language plates share the same design as the new English-language plates except “Prince Edward Island” is replaced with “Île-du-Prince-Édouard” and “Canada’s Green Province” is replaced with “La province verte du Canada.” The plate also displays the Island’s website for French-language visitors, www.douceurdelile.com.

“This new plate is a welcome addition to the French-language services we offer at the Department of Transportation and Public Works,” says Minister Ron MacKinley. “Together with Acadian and Francophone Affairs, our Department is always working to find ways to improve our French-language services and to recognize the Island’s rich culture.”

“We are pleased to see that the Department of Transportation and Public Works has taken a proactive approach in ensuring that Acadians and Francophones have access to license plates in the language of their choice,” says Minister responsible for Acadian and Francophone Affairs, Carolyn Bertram.

“This provincial government initiative is an important event not only for the Island’s Acadians and Francophones, but also for the entire population,” says Edmond Richard, President of La Société Saint-Thomas-d’Aquin. “The new French license plate launched this week will send the message across the province, in Canada, and elsewhere that French is an important aspect of life in Prince Edward Island. I hope that every Acadian and Francophone Islander will obtain this plate, as well as a number of other Islanders who share with us the pride we have in this language.”

The new plates are now available at all Access PEI locations at a cost of five dollars.
