Transportation and Public Works Presents Annual Environment Awards

The Provincial Department of Transportation and Public Works recently announced the winners of their annual Environmental Awards. Every year the department recognizes one contractor and one employee for their contributions to a beautiful, clean and sustainable environment on PEI through the department’s construction and maintenance activities.

The 2006 winners of the awards are Highfield Construction of New Glasgow, and Darrell Evans, the department’s Manager of Design and Bridge Maintenance.

The Minister of Transportation and Public Works Gail Shea cited Evans for his efforts to demonstrate a consistent and comprehensive approach to environmental management in his day-to-day work. Evans worked on several projects in 2006 that truly demonstrated that approach including the bridge replacement projects in Valleyfield and Stanley Bridge (Andersons Creek) and the arch culvert replacement in Breadalbane.

“Darrell Evans’ work is key to ensuring projects like these go ahead in an environmentally responsible manner,” noted Minister Shea. “Making sure our rivers and streams remain clean and healthy for years to come is a top priority for Darrell when planning these sorts of projects.”

In presenting the award to Highfield Construction’s Joe Cameron, Minister Shea noted the company’s tremendous track record for stabilizing work sites to prevent environmental damage.

“The staff at Highfield Construction is very sensitive to the need to protect our waterways. Staff is always co-operative with our environmental personnel,” said Minister Shea. “That’s a big reason why this company has become the first two time winner of our environmental achievement award.”

Highfield Construction also won the award in 2003.
