Workshop Looks At Protecting Visitors To Agricultural Events

* Agriculture, Fisheries & Aquaculture [to Jun 2007]
A workshop is being held on Friday at the Charlottetown Hotel on how to protect the health of visitors who attend agricultural events such as fairs, exhibitions, petting zoos and other activities where humans and animals interact. The workshop is presented by the Canadian Association of Fairs and Exhibitions.

“The program is designed to explore and educate how consumer protection programs can be more effective at events,” said Adele Moore, executive director of the Prince Edward Island Association of Exhibitions. “It will deal with how to manage the potential risks where humans and farm animals are in close proximity to one another.”

The federal government has provided $1.1 million to the Canadian Association of Fairs and Exhibitions to develop and deliver a consumer protection program to its members and others. The association has recognized the need to prevent the transmission of any health risks such as e-coli to its visitors.

Friday’s workshop is being presented by Dr. Stephen Neel, who developed a consumer protection program for the International Association of Fairs and Expositions. Those interested in attending the workshop can register at www.canadian-fairs.ca.
