Judicial Remuneration Review Commission Announced

The Attorney General P. Mitchell Murphy announced today the appointment by the Lieutenant Governor in Council of the members of the Judicial Remuneration Review Commission.

The appointees are Mr. Shaun MacIsaac, Mr. Gordon MacKay, Q.C. and Sylvia Poirier. The appointments were made pursuant to the Provincial Court Act, Judicial Remuneration Review Regulations which were enacted by the Lieutenant Governor in Council on 29 September 1997. The Commission's duties are to review judges' salaries and benefits and advise the Government as to the appropriateness of existing levels and whether changes are warranted.

The Regulations were enacted in response to and as a result of the recent decision of the Supreme Court of Canada in which the Court stated the only lawful means of increasing or decreasing judicial salaries and benefits was through a Commission such as this one.

Under the Regulations the Government nominates an individual and the Chief Judge of the Provincial Court nominates a second. The Chairperson is nominated by the other two nominees.

Mr. MacIsaac, a Chartered Accountant, the Government's nominee, is a partner in the accounting firm of MacIsaac Younker Roche Soloman. Mr. MacKay is a partner in the law firm of Carr, Stevenson and MacKay. Sylvia Poirier is a registered nurse and is an instructor in the Licensed Nursing Assistant Program at Holland College.
