Premier Pat Binns today announced that Provincial Cabinet has approved the appointment of Wayne D. Cheverie, QC as Chair of the Prince Edward Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission.
"Mr. Cheverie has excellent qualifications for the position," stated Premier Binns "his public policy experience, legal background, and knowledge of the issues and matters to be addressed by the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission will mean a minimum of disruption in the activities of the Commission during a period that has witnessed a change in both the Chair and Vice-Chair."
Mr. Cheverie graduated from Dalhousie University in 1974. He was a partner in the law firm of Campbell, Lea, Cheverie and Michael until 1986 when he won election to the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island. From 1986 to 1996 he held a number of Cabinet positions including: Provincial Treasurer, Minister of Health and Social Services, Justice and Attorney General, Labour, and Minister responsible for the Public Utilities Commission. He was also involved in the policy decisions that led to the establishment of the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission.
Mr. Cheverie will assume his duties immediately. He fills the position vacated by Linda Webber on her appointment to the Supreme Court of Prince Edward Island.
The Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission regulates utilities, hears and decides matters related to land use, including the disposition of applications respecting the acquisition of land by nonresidents and Corporations. The Commission also hears appeals from various provincial decision-making bodies.
