Municipal elections will be held across the Island on Monday, November 6, 2006 resulting in new councils being elected in approximately 75 separate municipalities. To be eligible to vote in the municipal elections, a person must be (a) 18 years of age or over by Election Day (November 6); (b) Canadian citizen, and ordinarily resident in the municipality for a period of six months preceding the date of the election.
Elections PEI, an independent, nonpartisan office of the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island, has overseen and run the past municipal elections held in 1994, 1997, 2000 and 2003. The Province of Prince Edward Island has offered the services of Elections PEI to oversee and run these four municipal elections within the four major municipalities of Charlottetown, Summerside, Stratford and Cornwall. Mr. Lowell Croken has been appointed as Chief Electoral Officer. In all other municipal elections across the Island, Elections PEI will exercise general direction and supervision over the administration and conduct of the municipal elections.
As stated in the election bylaws, there will be a door-to-door confirmation of electors within the four major municipalities of Charlottetown, Summerside, Stratford and Cornwall beginning on October 3, running for five days.
Two confirmation officers will call on each household in the four larger municipalities seeking the name, address and date of birth of each eligible elector within each household. Once the confirmation form is completed, a copy will be left at each household. Confirmed electors are asked to please keep their copy of the Confirmation Form as this contains the dates, times and locations of the advance polls as well as for the ordinary poll on election day. Please note that there has been a re-distribution of wards and polling divisions within Charlottetown, Summerside and Stratford so polling locations may have changed to meet these new wards and polling divisions. Check the bottom section of your yellow Confirmation Form for your exact polling information.
Should it happen that an eligible elector be missed during the confirmation period, he or she will still be able to get his or her name on the official List of Electors by registering with the Returning Officer of his or her municipal ward. Four days have been set aside for the registration of any eligible elector who might have been missed during the confirmation. Registration will begin on Friday, October 13 and will end on Tuesday, October 17, 2006.
A complete list of the Returning Officers will be published in the daily newspapers. This list will include the name, address, telephone number and fax number of each Returning Officer as well as the wards each represent.
