Premier Pat Binns joins all Islanders in his expression of sadness at the death of one of the world's truly great humanitarians.
"As a reminder of her selflessness and to show our sincere respect, the flag of Prince Edward Island will fly at half-mast at government offices across the province for the remainder of the week," stated Premier Binns.
"A champion for the less fortunate, Mother Teresa did much to increase global awareness of their plight. For almost seven decades, she worked tirelessly to bring some measure of care and comfort to those abandoned by society. Her unexpected death represents a profound loss not only to the people of her adopted country, India, but to the poor, sick and suffering all over the world."
"Her life's work has had a significant impact on hundreds of thousands, not only the sick and dying in the slums of Calcutta but on the many dedicated members of her order now serving in 111 countries around the world."
Founder of the Missionaries of Charity and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, her passing tragically coincides with that of Princess Diana whose funeral took place on Saturday.
In contrast to her own simple lifestyle, India will honour Mother Teresa with an unprecedented state funeral this weekend.
"Her messages of love and caring will be missed by so many as her death is mourned this week all over the world," said Premier Binns.
