The Department of Transportation and Public Works would like to remind Islanders that May is Bike Helmet Safety Month on Prince Edward Island.

Safe and proper use of bike helmets is an important way for Islanders and visitors alike to reduce the risk of harmful injury. Research and statistics show that proper use of bike helmets can be a major factor in helping to reduce head trauma injuries.

“With another beautiful Island summer upon us, I would ask all Islanders to help ensure that safety is a key part of the bicycling experience on Prince Edward Island,” said Transportation and Public Works Minister Gail Shea in the Provincial Legislature.

Educating Islanders young and old about the benefits of bike helmet safety is an ongoing objective for the Department of Transportation and Public Works. Staff from the department’s Highway Safety division work with the RCMP and local law enforcement to put on bike rodeos across the Island to showcase proper fitting techniques for bike helmets.

Shea commended the work being done in Island schools, kindergartens and child care facilities to help educate young Islanders about the importance of bike helmet safety. Shea also noted the importance of parents helping set a proper example for youth by wearing properly fitted bike helmets when they are bicycling as well. “From our local neighbourhoods to the Confederation Trail, there are wonderful opportunities for Islanders of all ages to enjoy our beautiful province through bicycling.

To ensure that the experience is a safe one, please remember to always wear a properly fitted bike helmet,” said Shea.
