Warm, Dry Weather Means PEI Provincial Golf Courses Open Earlier Than Usual

* Tourism [to Jan 2010]
The Minister of Tourism, Honourable Philip Brown, today announced that all the provincial golf courses will be ready and open for business earlier than usual this year. Brudenell is scheduled to be the first open on Thursday, April 27; Mill River has a planned opening of Friday, May 5; and Crowbush is scheduled to open Friday, May 12. Staff will continue to monitor conditions with plans to open Dundarave Friday, May 19, at the very latest.

“As usual, with the warm weather, golfers are more than ready to get out and dust off the clubs for the season,” said the Minister. “We were very fortunate this year that spring came early and the conditions have been especially good to dry out the ground making it possible to open the doors earlier than ever.”

The sport of golf has been rising in popularity each year and it is expected that this year will be even busier than years before. Enhanced marketing in the Atlantic, Quebec and New England regions will increase awareness of our unique summer destination. It is expected we will see many of these visitors on the golf courses, not only in the summer, but the growing spring and fall seasons as well.

Minister Brown added, “Aside from being one of our major tourism products for Prince Edward Island, the industry provides hundreds of jobs and infuses our economy with more than $90,000,000.” He also said, “With the Making the Connections®, Legends of Golf event coming June 19 and 20, it’s nice to see Dundarave in great shape to host the event. Golfers at the other three provincial courses will be pleased with the conditions there as well, giving golfers of all skill levels an early start to showing off their talents.”

Tee-off times can be booked by calling 1-800-235-8909. There is an added booking option of requesting tee-off times online at the website www.golflinkspei.com or by visiting the www.gentleisland.com website and following the golf links to “Golf Links PEI.”
