UPEI And The Department Of Health & Social Services Plan Summer Institute

* Health and Social Services [to Nov 2005]
The University of Prince Edward Island and the Department of Health and Social Services are planning a Summer Institute entitled Promoting Health: A Focus on Social Marketing from August 18-21st at the UPEI campus. Individuals from across Canada involved in various aspects of Health Promotion will attend.

The Institute focuses on demonstrating to participants how to use social marketing as a tool to promote health. During the Institute, participants will be introduced to the information, skills and steps necessary to plan, develop, implement and evaluate an effective social marketing campaign. Following the Institute, participants will return to their organizations and communities with skills to help them effectively plan and develop campaigns to promote health.

With over 23 years of experience, Maurice Borts, CEO of the Canadian Centre for Public Sector Marketing, will lead the Summer Institute. Borts will be joined by two leaders in the field of health promotion -- Francois Lagarde and Dr. Irving Rootman. Francois Lagarde has designed social marketing campaigns in the areas of health care, public health, AIDS, the environment, the elderly, family, smoking and substance abuse. Most notably, Mr. Lagarde was Vice-President and Manager of media campaigns for ParticipACTION. Dr. Irving Rootman is the Director of the Canadian Centre for Health Promotion and Professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine and Biostatistics at the University of Toronto.

To enhance the learning environment, several local health promotion practitioners have also been selected to showcase their work during the Institute.

Whether participants are working to advance social causes like protecting the environment, promoting regular exercise, preventing family violence or improving literacy, the Health Promotion Summer Institute provides individuals and organizations the chance to develop skills which will help them in creating health promotion campaigns.
