Vital Statistics services presently offered from the MacMillan Building in Charlottetown will be relocated effective August 4, 1997.
Health and Social Services Minister Mildred Dover said the move is necessary at this time to accommodate the establishment of the new Atlantic Tourism and Hospitality Institute on the property occupied by the MacMillan Building and old School of Nursing. The move, from an organizational perspective, also provides an opportunity to better integrate the Department's processing functions in Montague.
The Charlottetown Vital Statistics branch office will be relocated to the Department of Health and Social Services at the Riverview Business Centre at 16 Garfield Street in Charlottetown. Processing of Vital Statistics documents will be relocated to the Health and Social Services Montague location at 35 Douses Road in Montague, with other processing services.
Minister Dover said that while Charlottetown clients will no longer be able to access same-day service for some documents, except in emergency situations, they will have access to the same level of service offered throughout the Island.
"During the past year," she said, "Government has begun to offer Vital Statistics services from each of the six Regional Services Centres in Tignish, O'Leary, Wellington, Summerside, Montague and Souris as part of our ongoing efforts to provide one-stop shopping for government services. The increased access to services has been very effective in meeting people's information needs and eliminating unnecessary visits to Charlottetown."
There will be no staff reductions resulting from the relocation, and operational efficiencies are expected through the relocation of Vital Statistics processing services with other Health and Social Services processing services.
