Fifteen Students To Represent Prince Edward Island At National Heritage Fair

* Education [to Apr 2008]
Fifteen elementary and junior high students from Prince Edward Island are taking part in the CRB National Heritage Fair in Kingston, Ontario.

The Island students have the unique opportunity to share their heritage with 135 other students and Fair observers from across Canada in a public exhibition of their projects.

"The Island youth taking part in the CRB National Heritage Fair were selected from among hundreds of students who participated in the provincial Heritage Fair held in May in Charlottetown," says Hon. Chester Gillan, Minister responsible for Culture and Heritage. "These students have not only put together quality projects but they have also demonstrated outstanding research skills and a high level of enthusiasm."

Some of the Prince Edward Island exhibits include displays on coureur des bois, shipwrecks off Prince Edward Island and historical firsts. "The National Heritage Fair provides a wonderful opportunity to share our Island history and heritage with the rest of Canada," says Minister Gillan.

While in Kingston, students will tour the Thousand Islands River, explore the military tradition of the region by researching the history of forts, such as Fort Amherst - Port-La-Joye, and creating a Web page based on their findings, and attend a military Tattoo ceremony.
