July 14, 2005 * Transportation and Public Works [to Jan 2010]The Department of Transportation and Public Works would like to remind Islanders about the importance of safety when it comes to use of All-Terrain Vehicles (ATV’s). “Each year many Islanders enjoy using ATV’s in a safe and responsible manner. That’s possible because of riders respecting laws like the Off-Highway Vehicle Act which help keep everyone safe,” said Transportation and Public Works Minister Gail Shea. Under the Off-Highway Traffic Act, ATV’s are intended for off-highway use only. Operating an ATV on any Island highway is prohibited, with the exception of crossing the road. Using an ATV on the Confederation Trail is also prohibited. The Department of Transportation and Public Works recently launched ‘Ride Smart! Ride Safe!’, a public education campaign which aims to increase awareness of laws governing safe and responsible ATV use on Prince Edward Island. Media Contact: Jeff Himelman
