The Prince Edward Island Liquor Control Commission is teaming up with 11 other Canadian liquor boards to encourage boaters and personal watercraft operators to enjoy summer water fun safely by not drinking any alcohol until they have finished their activities for the day.
With the message “Have fun in the sun - but don’t drink ‘til you’re done” the English and French campaign posters show a couple riding a personal watercraft during the day and later enjoying a barbecue and a drink with friends. The poster will be displayed at all PEILCC stores and marinas this summer.
“When operating personal watercraft, you need to keep yourself and your passengers safe,” said Michael F. Currie, Minister Responsible for the PEILCC. “This campaign encourages people to act responsibly and not consume alcohol until they’ve finished their summer activities.”
“With the public’s help, we can reduce and even eliminate the number of alcohol-related water incidents that occur each summer,” said Wayne MacDougall, CEO of the PEILCC.
“The misuse of alcohol when operating off-road vehicles is becoming a concern in all areas of the country. By joining together through a national campaign, liquor jurisdictions across Canada hope to raise public awareness of this issue,” said Don Lussier, President and CEO of the Manitoba Liquor Control Commission and current CALJ Chair. “This joint national campaign reminds everyone that drinking and driving should never mix whether you are on a roadway or enjoying off-road recreational activities.”
The Canadian Association of Liquor Jurisdictions (CALJ) is co-ordinating this social responsibility initiative which will also promote all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and snowmobile safety in the fall of 2005 and winter of 2006. This water safety campaign will help raise awareness of the dangers on, in and near the water and hopefully convince the public to think before they drink and enter the water.
