Nominations Being Accepted for Second Annual Champions for Children Awards

Premier's Office
The Premier’s Council on Healthy Child Development is again inviting Islanders to submit nominations for the annual Champions for Children Awards.

The Premier’s Council on Healthy Child Development Champions for Children Awards are presented to Islanders who have made significant contributions to the well-being of young children.

“Many excellent activities that support Prince Edward Island children and families are happening every day,” said Premier’s Council Chair, Dr. David Wong. “The Champions for Children Awards provide an opportunity to show our appreciation for these efforts.”

Nominees must be individuals or groups who have demonstrated support, encouragement and sensitivity to the needs of young children and their families; encouraged parents, family, or community involvement; been innovative and creative in addressing concerns; and have developed partnerships and motivated others. Three awards are presented annually. Nominees must be residents of Prince Edward Island.

Champions for Children Award recipients in 2004 were Dr. Jennifer Taylor, for her commitment to improving the eating habits of Island children; Metro Fire Prevention Association, for their efforts to promote fire prevention education and community safety; and Kids West Family Resource Centre, for their commitment to children, families and communities in West Prince.

“The Champions for Children Awards recognize exemplary practices that contribute to the healthy development of young children,” Premier Binns said. “I encourage people to submit names of individuals, organizations, businesses and communities who have contributed to the well-being of young children and their families in PEI.”

The awards are presented as part of the Healthy Child Development Strategy, which is monitored by the Premier’s Council on Healthy Child Development.

The deadline for nominations is January 31, 2005. Nomination forms are available online at www.gov.pe.ca/hcd/ or can be picked up at Access PEI sites.
