Provincial Government and Teachers Ratify New Contract

Premier Binns and Education Minister Mildred Dover expressed pleasure today with the fact that the provincial government and the Prince Edward Island Teachers’ Federation have reached a new three-year collective agreement.

The new contract, which was ratified Thursday, includes a general economic increase of 2 percent each year for the next three years as well as salary grid adjustments which will enhance the province’s ability to recruit new teachers and retain experienced teachers. The contract also includes improved maternity, parental and bereavement leave, increased life insurance benefits and additional professional development funding.

Premier Binns said the contract reflects the provincial government’s commitment to education, teachers and fiscal responsibility. “With the tremendous support and cooperation of the teachers, we now have a settlement that responds to the specific requests of Island teachers and puts our teachers’ salaries and benefits squarely within the context of the regional average,” he said.

The contract received the overwhelming support of Prince Edward Island’s teachers.

Minister Dover said both negotiating teams were pleased to have been able to reach a satisfactory agreement in a way that supports the positive working relationship that exists between the province and its teachers. “The new competitive compensation package and additional benefits will further support a positive working environment for teachers who have a tremendous influence on the growth and development of our children,” said Minister Dover.

The new contract becomes effective July 1, 2004.
