Minister Pleased with Job Creation and Economic Development in Borden-Carleton Area

Development and Technology Minister Mike Currie toured three businesses in central PEI which, between them, will create close to 200 jobs for the province. The three businesses Minister Currie had an opportunity to tour today included the beef plant in Albany - Atlantic Beef Products, Master Packaging Inc. and Quality Thermoform and Packaging.

Atlantic Beef Products will provide significant support to both the PEI’s agricultural sector as well as the whole Maritime beef industry. The plant will process cattle from all three Maritime provinces and will sell their products to customers throughout Atlantic Canada. When the facility is in full operation, it will create approximately 70 new jobs.

Master Packaging Inc. is a successful, fully integrated box company with a full-scale box plant in Dieppe, New Brunswick and a sheet plant in Borden-Carleton, Prince Edward Island. It has recently expanded its Borden-Carleton facility and will create approximately 80 jobs when in full operation.

Quality Thermoform & Packaging is a manufacturer of recyclable thermoformed products for the technology, automotive, pharmaceutical, food and hardware industries. The company is located in the former Strait Crossing administrative building in Borden-Carleton. Presently, they employ close to 20 individuals and expect employment to reach 45 as the business responds to new market opportunities. Quality Thermoform & Packaging’s head office is located in Toronto where it has operated since 1985.

“Increasing employment to this part of the province has been an important goal for our government,” said Minister Currie. “These new developments involve significant private sector investment, which demonstrates a real faith in the potential of this area and of this province.”
