NEW INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES ASSOCIATION OF PEI FORMED

* Economic Development [to Jul 1998]
The Information Technologies Association of PEI (ITAP) has recently been formed through the efforts and organization of various private sector interests with the assistance of Enterprise PEI. The association will provide leadership on issues that affect the growth and prosperity of the Information Technology and Communications Industry on Prince Edward Island. ITAP is affiliated with the Information Technology Association of Canada (ITAC), to cooperatively provide leadership on issues affecting the growth and profitability of the industry in PEI and in Canada.

ITAP and its members will be working collectively to promote and develop the Information Technology Industry within PEI and represent the industry as an advocacy group provincially, nationally and internationally.

The association will identify, initiate and develop information technology opportunities and initiatives which are progressive, innovative and sustainable for the general improvement and development of the information technology industry. It is the view of the ITAP members that improved co-ordination and co-operation in both the private and public sectors is essential for the long-term growth and viability of the information technology industry on PEI.

"Our industry recognizes that significant opportunities exist for PEI companies in the information technology sector: regionally, nationally and internationally. The association will commit our members to develop the industry, its capacity and capabilities, so that PEI may take full advantage of this rapidly growing sector of the economy," says Ed Lawlor, President of ITAP.

"The establishment of ITAP is a clear and positive sign of the emergence of the information technology industry in PEI. Government recognizes the potential for expansion and economic growth in information technology and looks forward to working with ITAP to further develop this sector," added Hon. Wes MacAleer, Minister of Economic Development and Tourism.

With the endorsement of some sixty (60) information technology companies, an interim Board of Directors has been established. ITAP will be funded though association membership fees and proceeds from scheduled special events and activities. The association is currently planning an initial kickoff event. More details pertaining to this event will be released when they are confirmed. For information on membership application forms call 629-3444.
