East Baltic Bog To Be Developed

* Fisheries and Environment [to Jul 1998]
Kevin MacAdam, Minister of Fisheries and Environment today announced that his department is accepting ecotourism development proposals for the promotion and interpretation of two properties at East Baltic Bog. Since these properties were designated under the Natural Areas Protection Act in October, area residents have suggested that developing the area as an ecotourism destination would be both appropriate and desirable.

In announcing the request for proposals Mr. MacAdam stressed that, "The focus of proposals should be on the promotion and interpretation of the natural features of the site. We want this area developed with a sensitivity and understanding of the unique features of East Baltic Bog." Mr. MacAdam also announced that the Nature Conservancy of Canada will provide $10,000 to help the successful proposal meet the goals of a sustainable ecotourism project while following the Natural Area Management Plan for the properties.

Mr. MacAdam concluded by emphasizing that a successful proposal must reflect the provisions of the Natural Areas Protection Act while increasing the potential contribution of the properties to the sustainable economic development of the eastern Kings area. Specific detail on how the natural features of the site are to be protected from construction activities and visitor use must be outlined in submitted proposals. Groups or organizations with an interest in submitting proposals that address both interpretation and management of the properties should contact the PEI Department of Fisheries and Environment.

The East Baltic Bog was the scene of considerable controversy last year when it was to be harvested for peat. There was a show of public support to protect it and to develop it instead for ecotourism and educational purposes.
