A new company will set up shop in Bloomfield, PEI to produce subs and sandwiches that will be shipped to three distribution centres across the Maritimes. The new company, Sandwich Factory Foods, will create 50 full-time, year-round jobs in the West Prince area.
Positions will include everything from making subs and sandwiches to shipping and receiving product to administration work. The company hopes to break ground this month and to hire the first 25 workers in early fall so that the plant can officially open in October 2004. A second production line, with 25 additional workers, will be hired at a later date.
“This is a promise we made to the people of West Prince and I am pleased to say that we continue to keep our commitment to attract development to West Prince,” said Pat Binns, Premier of Prince Edward Island. “We are not immune to the concerns expressed by the people of West Prince. We heard those concerns loud and clear.”
“The people of West Prince have been concerned about the future prospects for employment in the area,” said Gail Shea, Minister of Transportation and Public Works and MLA for Tignish Deblois. “With the announcement of these jobs, and the creation of 40 full-time jobs at Testori and 15 jobs at Wiebel, this will mean 105 new, full-time jobs for this area. When you add in the construction of new facilities, this amounts to substantial jobs creation,” she said.
This new company is an amalgamation of two Maritime companies located in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and Scoudouc, New Brunswick. All of the subs and sandwiches that were being produced at the facilities in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick will now be produced in PEI for Maritime distribution.
The new facility will be certified by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) as a federally-inspected food processing operation.
The two companies involved in the project are:

-Les Aliments Sandwich Factory Foods
Scoudouc, New Brunswick
The subs and sandwiches will be distributed on PEI by Mac’s Fast Snacks.
Construction is scheduled to begin this month, pending CFIA approval.
Prince Edward Island Business Development Inc. is contributing $250,000 to help defray equipment costs of approximately $1,000,000. In addition, PEIBDI will be offering to lease the company a 9000 square foot plant.
