A delegation of three companies from Prince Edward Island will participate in the upcoming Team Canada Atlantic trade mission to Washington, D.C., to be held April 25-29, 2004. A total of 27 companies from across Atlantic Canada will participate in the trade mission.
"Trade is a crucial component in building Atlantic Canada's growing economy," said the Honourable Joe McGuire, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA). "Trade missions figure front and centre in ACOA's overall approach to trade development. We put our region's business people on the ground in major U.S. markets where they can pursue contacts, generate leads and access real business opportunities."
"Over the last five years, two thirds of Prince Edward Island's exports have been to the Northeastern United States," said Pat Binns, Premier of Prince Edward Island. "Island companies have increased their commitment to produce quality products and services so as to compete and succeed in today's global marketplace. Time and time again, this dedication to quality rewards our companies with success in export markets such as Washington, D.C."
Team Canada Atlantic missions are designed to increase trade and to attract foreign direct investment for Atlantic Canada through strategic initiatives targeted specifically to select U.S. markets. The missions introduce export-ready firms to international markets and provide experienced exporters the opportunity to explore new markets.
Since the Team Canada Atlantic program began in 1999, there has been a total of eight trade missions to the United States. The missions have enabled more than 300 Atlantic Canadian firms to meet with over 2,300 buyers, agents, and business owners from across the United States, helping to generate $20 million in short term sales and more than $115 million in long-term sales.
