IT Generation Program Extended to Seniors

The highly successful IT Generation program has now been extended to senior's groups. The It Generation program is sponsored by Technology PEI and led by Future Tech West. It provides the means for groups to purchase equipment to maintain a functioning computer club. In the past, the program has funded 29 youth groups across the Island.

The existing youth IT clubs meet regularly within their communities and take part in group activities and exchange IT related ideas. Some activities include web page design and interaction with other organizations that work with youth.

The program will continue to be available to youth groups.

Seniors will be invited to form a computer club to meet on a regular basis to learn more about the benefits of information technology. The club will be led by at least one member who has a good understanding of desktop basics, the internet, e-mail and minor computer maintenance. The activities of the club could be used to support an existing volunteer group.

"Through our Senior's Net tutorials, we learned that there is great interest among seniors in exploring the benefits of information technology, " said Development and Technology Minister Mike Currie. "The IT Generation program will give seniors groups the means to use this technology to expand their own knowledge base and to benefit their communities."

Selection of new youth and senior's clubs to be part of IT Generation will be done on a competitive basis. Successful groups will receive a start-up grant of $2,000 to provide IT tools for their club activities.

Applications are available online at www.techpei.com or by calling Darren Gill at Future Tech West (902) 859-1962. Deadline for applications is Friday, November 14, 2003.

It Generation is a special initiative of Technology PEI under its strategic mandate to provide leadership in the adoption, development and use of technology and business and communities across PEI.
