The Government of Prince Edward Island today announced a commitment of $200,000 to address the immediate needs of Islanders affected by Hurricane Juan. The process has also begun to access funding through the Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements program. Adjusters are now assessing damages brought on by Hurricane Juan on September 29, 2003. Already, adjustors have a list of more than 100 properties to visit.
"Our first priority is to assist Islanders who urgently need help to recover from the effects of Hurricane Juan," says Elmer MacFadyen, Minister responsible for the Emergency Measures organization. "It is our hope, that this fund can help to alleviate some of those immediate hardships."
Islanders who are in need of urgent assistance as a result of the storm are asked to contact the emergency operations centre at (902) 368-0169 or (902) 368-0246.
Minister MacFadyen stressed that the provincial fund is a first response aimed at alleviating hardships resulting from damage to property, and that further assistance through the Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements program will be available upon the completion of damage assessments.
Islanders are asked to document damages to their property through pictures, receipts etc., and to contact their insurance companies to determine what damages may be covered under their insurance. You may also be eligible for assistance under the Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements. For information and to report damages contact the Emergency Measures Organization at (902) 368-0169 or (902) 368-0246 and an adjuster will be sent to assess your damages.
