Prince Edward Island will host the annual conference of provincial and territorial Ministers Responsible for Local Government September 14-16, 2003 in Charlottetown. Preparations have been ongoing for several months to ensure that all plans are in place for the coming meetings. The Honourable George Abbott, BC Minister of Community, Aboriginal and Women's Services will chair the meetings.
"I am pleased that Prince Edward Island has been chosen to host the 2003 meetings of Ministers Responsible for Local Government," says Minister Abbott. "These meetings are a wonderful opportunity for ministers from across Canada to discuss common issues and challenges facing local governments and gain a greater understanding of the issues facing each province and territory."
Discussion topics will include a variety of issues of importance to local governments across the country including infrastructure, legislation, and resilience and recovery challenges that arise in small municipalities.
A news conference will be held at the end of the meetings on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 at 2 p.m. in the Edward Room of the Delta Prince Edward Hotel in Charlottetown.
PEI Minister of Community and Cultural Affairs, Elmer MacFadyen, will be absent from the meetings due to the provincial election campaign.
