The Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island will host the XIIIth Session of the America Regional Assembly of the International Assembly of French-speaking Parliamentarians (AIPLF) to be held in Prince Edward Island from August 14 to 18, 1996 in conjunction with National Acadian Day.
Ten of the eleven sections of the America region of the AIPLF will be represented. They are Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Canada, Maine, Louisiana and Haiti. This is the first time that a session of the Assembly of the America Region is held in Prince Edward Island. The province will be officially installed as a new section of the AIPLF during an official ceremony at the Legislative Assembly on August 14, 1996 at 6:30 p.m.
Honourable Nancy E. Guptill, Honorary President of the Prince Edward Island Section of the AIPLF and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, recognizes the excellent contribution of the AIPLF to promoting French language and culture at the provincial and international levels.
The President of the Prince Edward Island Section, Robert Maddix, is pleased that the XIIIth Session of the America Region will be held on the Island. "I am pleased to receive my fellow Parliamentarians from all areas of French America; this event will contribute to the promotion of the Acadian and Francophone community of Prince Edward Island."
During the deliberations of the XIIIth session, America Region Parliamentarians will proceed to the inauguration of the Internet Web Site of the America Region of the AIPLF. Topics of discussion will include the role of Parliamentarians in the development of the French language and culture within the context of the economic integration of the Americas, French-language post-secondary education and new technologies, and French language community radios in America: overview and perspectives.
Special guests will include Mr. Bruno Amoussou, chair of the AIPLF and chair of the Benin National Assembly. Also, seven Islanders will be awarded the prestigious Ordre de la Pléiade during a special ceremony to be held on August 17 at the Le Village tourism complex. This international award recognizes the accomplishments of those who have distinguished themselves by promoting the cooperation and friendship ideals of the AIPLF.
