Premier Pat Binns and Anita Stewart, Founder of Cuisine Canada, are tying on their "I Support Canadian Beef" aprons to lead a team of celebrity chefs in a barbeque blitz with beef this Friday afternoon. All in all, nine celebrity chefs will set beef to sizzle beginning at two o'clock at the Culinary Institute of Canada to provide tasty samples during a "Celebration of Beef Celebrity Barbeque Cook-Off."
The general public is cordially invited to join Premier Binns and Anita Stewart as well as Mitch Murphy, Doug MacLean, Richard Wood, Marie Nightingale, Anne MacRae, Steve Sharratt and Liam Dolan as they work their barbeque magic. The celebrities will team up with chefs from the Culinary Institute of Canada and members of the PEI Cattlemen's Association to grill beef to perfection using cuts that are in oversupply.
Premier Binns is barbequing a Marie Nightingale recipe - Steak and Smoked Atlantic Salmon, a fabulous "surf and turf" presentation. Agriculture minister Mitch Murphy will be preparing Japapeno Glazed Flank Steak. Richard Wood, PEI fiddling superstar, will trade his fiddle and bow for salad servers, as he prepares Chinese Steak Salad.
Doug MacLean of the Columbus Blue Jackets will be working at the barbeque with another celebrity chef, Marie Nightingale, Food Editor of Saltscapes and author of three cookbooks, including the classic Out of Old Nova Scotia Kitchens. Doug and Marie will wow the crowd with Blue Cheese Beef Medallions, known as Gordie Howe's all-time favourite recipe. Anne MacRae, a newsperson from Magic'93 will work with Chef Austin Clements to prepare Austin's own beef creation. Steve Sharratt, a Guardian journalist and musician, will add "celebrity chef " to his resume after he whips together the Beef BBQ Quick Roast during the Celebration of Beef. Liam Dolan, owner-chef of the Claddagh Room and Peakes in Charlottetown, will expertly prepare BBQ Roast on a Bun using a cross rib cut of beef.
The general public is invited to come and cheer on their favourite celebrity and sample bite-size portions of several of the beef recipes. There is no charge for this event. Everyone is encouraged to attend in support of the Prince Edward Island beef industry. For more information, contact Joan Perrin, Brand Manager, Atlantic Branded Beef Management Inc.
