Tourism Week, June 18-25 is underway providing an opportunity to raise awareness of the economic and social benefits of the industry to our Island economy. Premier Binns is taking part in the celebrations and today visited tourism operations in the southeastern part of the province.
"Our government is very proud of the reputation that tourism has developed for the province of Prince Edward Island," noted Premier Binns. "I wanted to personally show my support for the owners, operators and staff of this key industry as they embark on the 2003 summer season."
On Prince Edward Island, tourism supports economic and community development and generates significant revenues and benefits for our province. In Prince Edward Island, tourism is worth $353 million a year and employs approximately 20,000 people in tourism related businesses.
"Every year we speculate about the potential for success in the tourism marketplace," said Premier Binns. "This year there seems to be even more speculation than usual given the many challenges facing the industry. Obviously there are hurdles, but the Tourism Industry Association of Prince Edward Island, Tourism PEI and the many partners of the sector remain diligent in their marketing and delivery of product. I am confident that those who decide to travel are likely to choose Prince Edward Island as their vacation destination."
Tourism Week is celebrated across Canada in every province and territory and provides an opportunity to link national celebrations to those happening in the various provinces, raising the tourism industry's profile throughout Canada.
