Prince Edward Island Launches New Volunteer Recognition Program

* Community and Cultural Affairs [to Jun 2007]
Premier Pat Binns officially launched the Prince Edward Island Volunteer Recognition Award earlier today in the Legislative Assembly. The premier explained, as a followup to the announcement in the November 2002 Throne Speech, that seven Islanders will receive this prestige award annually commencing this November.

"Volunteering is a way of life across Prince Edward Island for many people of all ages," said the premier. "We are very fortunate that more than 38,000 community-minded individuals give countless hours at our rinks, our schools, our churches and to individuals without ever looking for recognition."

The award citation will read "To the Service of Others."

"It is fitting to recognize these special Islanders because volunteers are often the lifeline to many individuals and events and our communities depend on them," said Elmer MacFadyen, Minister of Community and Cultural Affairs and Minister responsible for Volunteerism.

An individual can be nominated by another member of the community or an organization, giving details of their dedication and commitment to volunteer work. Nomination forms will be available at all Access PEI Centres in the next couple of weeks and the deadline to submit a nomination is September 30, 2003.
