Advisory Council on the Status of Women Challenges Candidates

The Advisory Council on the Status of Women has released their Federal Election 2000 Guide to the Issues. This Guide highlights pertinent federal issues facing Island women, as well as providing some questions to ask local candidates that will assist Islanders in making their choices for candidates and federal parties.

Supporting the Advisory Council on the Status of Women's mandate to influence policies and programs that support women at work, home and in their communities, Council members developed the Election 2000 Guide to reflect issues that have relevance throughout Island communities.

"The new federal government must know that women will settle for nothing less than clear, concrete action to improve the status of women, men and children on Prince Edward Island," states Advisory Council Chairperson, Patricia Roy-Ballem. "We must continue to push for change that removes barriers for women and respects the role that women play in our society."

The Guide does not address all issues concerning women on PEI, but serves as a basis for further discussions. The aim of the publication is to encourage women to voice their ideas and concerns and ask candidates and their parties to make political commitments to improve the quality of life for all Islanders. The issues addressed in the Guide focus on child care, paid and unpaid work, caregiving, reproductive health, access to justice and poverty.
