The PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women and Transition House Association hosted a gathering of community groups and individuals July 18 to strategize for changes to the justice system. Island women's and community groups have received dozens of calls from women and men concerned about the most recent cases of violence against women, including the murder of Deborah Holmes. Callers expressed anger, frustration and a sense of helplessness. They feel outraged that the system seems to be failing to protect women and children from violence.
Presently, many groups are sponsoring Island-based research and projects regarding violence against women and the response of the justice system. These are valuable efforts. However, members of the ad hoc coalition formed during this meeting, agreed that some immediate action is needed along with more long-term strategies.
The ad hoc coalition generated a list of creative and broad ideas and also agreed to focus on two immediate actions. Starting July 24, there will be vigils held at the Supreme Court on Water Street in Charlottetown and at the Summerside Courthouse. Each vigil will offer the community an opportunity to gather and make a public statement with their presence. All are welcome to participate. For more information about the Charlottetown vigils, phone the Advisory Council at 368-4510. To find out more about the Summerside vigils, phone East Prince Women's Information Centre at 436-9856.
Groups and individuals will also be sending letters to the Premier and Attorney General asking for a public statement committing to action on the issue of violence against women as well as a formal review of the justice system in PEI. Copies of letters will be available at the vigil on July 24 to sign and send to government representatives.
It's time for change. Enough is enough!
