The PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women has requested that Prime Minister Jean Chretien appoint a qualified woman candidate to the position of Lieutenant Governor to replace Hon. Gilbert R. Clements when his term ends August 30th.
While congratulating Hon. Gilbert Clements on a successful term of office, the Advisory Council wishes to remind the federal government of its stated commitment to improving women's representation in high profile political positions in this country. The Advisory Council states that it is important for whoever fills the role of Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island that they support and promote women's equality as well as many other equality issues in this province.
"We, as Islanders and as Canadians, want to see more diversity and improved gender representation in political and judicial appointments," says Chairperson, Patricia Roy-Ballem. "It is through these efforts to address inequities that we will see our political leaders truly reflect the diversity that exists in Canada."
The Advisory Council encourages Islanders to support this request to the Prime Minister by writing or faxing his office in Ottawa.
