Prince Edward Island Minister Responsible for Harness Racing, Hon. Mitch Murphy, today announced the appointment of Wendell Shaw of Summerside to the Maritime Provinces Harness Racing Commission, effective March 31, for a three-year term. The MPHRC is the regulatory body for harness racing within the region.
A retired school administrator and teacher, Mr. Shaw has been a long-time participant in Maritime harness racing, as a breeder, owner, and trainer. He has also served as a member of various harness racing industry panels, as well as serving Summerside minor hockey as board member and president, and is currently vice-president of the Prince Edward Island Hockey Association.
"In his thirty-year career as a school principal, Wendell gained a reputation for fairness in interpretation and application of rules and regulations," said Mr. Murphy. "This asset, combined with his thirty plus years as an active participant in Maritime harness racing eminently qualifies him to serve on the Commission."
Mr. Shaw replaces George Riley on the MPHRC Board. Mr. Riley had served for six years on the Commission, the last three as chairperson, and had chosen not to offer for re-appointment. "I would also like to recognize the important contribution George Riley has made during his terms on the MPHRC," said the minister. "He has served the industry well as chair, and he will be missed."
As a regulatory body, the MPHRC is responsible for the governance and regulation of all harness racing activities within the Maritimes and oversees live racing at eight tracks. Over one thousand people are licensed annually by the Commission as owners, trainers, drivers, grooms, officials and track employees.
Mr. Shaw joins Patrick (Paddy) Murphy of Stratford, as Prince Edward Island directors on the MPHRC. The other members are Michael Sullivan and Don Dalling of New Brunswick and Don MacLellan and Frank Balcolm of Nova Scotia. John Blakney serves as Director of Racing.
