Between Generations Funding Announced

Successful applicants of the Between Generations program will receive funding to complete their projects.

The five organizations selected in round two for funding are: The Reciprocity Cap Site, who will feature the History of the Dundas Plowing Match & Agriculture Exhibition; Vernon River Special Studies Class, who will explore Small Churches of Yesterday; St. Teresa Consolidated, who will look at Island Transportation; Palmer Road Parish CAP Site, Life as a Teen – Then & Now; and Kensington Youth Technology Team, who will also examine the Life as a Teen – Then & Now.

"The Between Generations program offers a win-win experience for the seniors and the youth involved," said Richard Baker, Teacher Librarian and School Technology Consultant (STC) at Bluefield High School. "My students have told me that their experience and participation in the program was not only interesting (from an educational standpoint), but also that it has left a lasting impression with them."

Between Generations requires youth meet with other generations to discuss historically significant events and create Web sites based on their research. Through this collaborative effort, local traditions and history are shared, discussed and maintained electronically.

"Since the program was first introduced in 2000, thirty-three youth organizations across PEI have received funding to complete their projects," said Michael F. Currie, Minister of Development & Technology. "Twenty-eight of the thirty-three organizations have completed their projects and launched their sites. Through this program, youth are provided with the opportunity to develop information technology skills while learning historical Island stories from people of a different generation."

Applicants to the program must be a recognized youth group or affiliated with a youth group. A maximum of $4,000 is provided to each group for equipment, staffing, or other expenditures necessary to complete their project.

Between Generations is an initiative of Technology PEI, a provincial crown corporation, established to advance the growth and development in Prince Edward Island's sector. Technology PEI plays a leadership role in the development, use and adoption of information technology for business and community in Prince Edward Island.
