Members of the new Prince Edward Island Waste Management Commission were named today. Announced by the Honourable Kevin J. MacAdam, Minister of Fisheries and Environment, the new commissioners include a chairperson, three members from each of Prince and Kings County, four from Queen County, one representative at large, and a representative from the provincial department. David Boyce of Murray Harbour North will serve as Chairperson of the Commission. "I was extremely pleased with the interest and enthusiasm that Islanders have shown in this process," said Minister MacAdam. "More than 75 individuals offered or were nominated for the Commission. As a result we were able to put together an extremely experienced and capable group to tackle the waste management challenges that face Prince Edward Island."
In April the Prince Edward Island Department of Fisheries and Environment released a new waste management strategy for the province, and the creation of an island-wide waste management commission was announced at that time. The new Commission has been given the responsibility for planning and implementing a province-wide source separation waste management system. It will also conduct a site selection process to identify locations for composting, bulk waste disposal and recycling. "The Commission has a full agenda and I am confident that they will move quickly to fulfil their mandate," said Mr. MacAdam.
