The Department of Transportation and Public Works, in partnership with the Construction Association of PEI, today announced the implementation of Building Construction and Contracting Guidelines for projects undertaken by the department.
The guidelines, developed jointly by the Department and the Construction Association of PEI, outline the process whereby the Department of Transportation and Public Works will call and award building construction contracts. Among the items covered include standardized definitions and procedures for the soliciting of tenders, tender security, the tender receipt process, and the awarding of tenders.
"These guidelines will help maintain the high level of confidence in the tender process by ensuring that tendering is done fairly and consistently. By working together, we are helping increase economic opportunity within the construction sector, and I want to thank the Association for their ongoing efforts," said Transportation and Public Works Minister Gail Shea.
The Department of Transportation and Public Works formed a working group with the Construction Association of PEI last year to help address issues of competitiveness such as increased productivity and efficiency through technology, training and employment opportunities, barriers to growth and future development opportunities.
"Concrete measures like this will help our membership by building the foundation of increased competitiveness and increase opportunities for continued growth in the industry," said Francis Reid, General Manager of the Construction Association of PEI.
The construction industry is a significant contributor to the economy of Prince Edward Island, employing approximately 4,000 people and generating sales of $400M in 2002.
