Two youth organizations have received grants under Technology PEI's IT Club program. The grants provide the necessary tools to form IT Clubs. Those tools include hardware, software and computer accessories such as speakers, scanners and digital cameras. The IT Clubs may also use a portion of the money for training or instructor fees.
The groups receiving grants are: The Alberton Boys and Girls Club and The Tignish Boys and Girls Club. Each group will receive $2000 from Technology PEI.
Since the program started in the Fall of 2000, Technology PEI, together with Digital Innovations, has been successful in helping to create 31 IT Clubs within Prince Edward Island. The province wide clubs are participating in the Technology PEI's IT Generation program. Each club is also expected to create a web presence.
"Preparing our young people for the world of information technology is a responsibility we take very seriously," said Mike Currie, Minister of Development and Technology. "This program gives youth the tools they need to apply their imaginations and creativity in a high technology setting."
The existing youth IT Clubs meet regularly within their communities and take part in group activities and exchange IT related ideas. Some activities include web page design and interaction with other organizations that work with youth.
The IT Generation program is for organizations who demonstrate a commitment to youth, who have easy community access and who have the presence of a strong board of directors.
Digital Innovations, the Level II CAP site in Tignish, is delivering the program on behalf of Technology PEI. The IT Generation web page can be found at http://tigcap.peicaps.org/itgeneration. The site is a central location to list upcoming events at all IT Generation locations, information on the participating sites and other general information.
Technology PEI is the Government of Prince Edward Island's lead agency in the development, adoption and use of information technologies in business and community in the province.
