The Honourable Mike Currie, Minister of Development and Technology, has announced his department's second annual Shop for Christmas on PEI campaign.
The campaign began last year. It consists of advertisements urging Islanders to stay in the province to do their Christmas shopping.
"By doing their Christmas shopping here in the province, Islanders are supporting their neighbours and their families and their friends," said Minister Currie. "The retail and craft sector is an important contributor to the Prince Edward Island economy, and it's up to all of us to help the growth of that sector to continue."
PEI's rate of consumer spending increased at a rate of four per cent this year. The rate of consumer spending in the province has exceeded the national average for the past six years. Early this month, Provincial Treasure Pat Mella indicated that provincial source revenues increased by approximately $9.3 million from budget, largely from sales tax.
"The money Islanders spend here at home at Christmas is money that will continue to work on the Island," said Minister Currie. "I encourage all Islanders to do their Christmas shopping right here on PEI."
The campaign will begin this week and will run until Christmas.
