Seniors in Prince Edward Island can now have access to free computer training in their own home.
Technology PEI Inc., KenNet Inc., and Morell Region Community Centre and Community Access Program (CAP) sites have developed a new program called Senior's Net which will also focus on the many functions of the Internet.
Development and Technology Minister Mike Currie says the Senior's Net program was developed as a result of the many requests made by seniors for computer assistance and one-on-one training.
"Over the past two years KenNet Inc. and the Morell region CAP site have held seniors camps at their CAP sites based on the interest and demand; however, the demand has grown and spread to areas outside of the Kensington and Morell communities," said Minister Currie. "It is encouraging to see this type of interest from seniors, as technology can enhance many of their activities."
The Seniors Net program consists of two 90 minute one-on-one training sessions with a qualified tutor and an interactive CD ROM. The first session focuses on basic computer skills in easy to understand terms. Some topics will include printing and saving files and how to use a computer mouse. The second session focuses on a series of applications surrounding the Internet, including how to use email and how to perform a search for reliable health information.
Seniors have the option of receiving training in their own home on their own system or at one of the 77 CAP sites in Prince Edward Island. The course will also be made available to seniors clubs and community care facilities, creating a shared learning environment within care facilities.
