August 27, 2002 * Health and Social Services [to Nov 2005]Two twelve-year-old boys from PEI were admitted to hospital in Prince County this past weekend with a diagnosis of E coli 0157:H7. Their condition is improved today. The boys attended Camp Abegweit in Augustine Cove August 18 to August 23, 2002. A total of 13 of the 70 who attended the camp have reported being ill with abdominal symptoms. Chief Health Officer Dr. Lamont Sweet advised that people can become quite ill from this bacteria which comes from food or water. A water sample taken from the camp yesterday is showing no evidence of bacteria, and all the food left over from the camp has been discarded so no samples are available for testing. "A water source for the outbreak is very unlikely. It is probable that there was a food responsible for the illness," said Dr. Sweet. An attempt has been made to reach all those who attended the camp. Anyone who attended between August 18 and August 23 and has not been contacted is asked to contact the Department of Health and Social Services at 368-4900 or 368-4996. Media Contact: Lamont Sweet
