Team PEI recently returned home with twenty-four medals from the 2002 Special Olympic Canada Summer Games in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Island athletes competed in aquatics, athletics, 5-pin bowling, soccer and softball.
The Honourable Gail A. Shea, Minister Responsible for Recreation and Sport, offers congratulations to Team PEI in the Special Olympic Canada Summer Games on a tremendous showing and successful competition.
"It is my pleasure to congratulate Team PEI on a very successful showing at the 2002 Special Olympic Canada Summer Games," says Minister Shea. "Mission staff, coaches, spectators and athletes were all wonderful ambassadors for Prince Edward Island, and we are proud of your competitiveness, participation and success."
Prince Edward Island will play host to the next Canadian Special Olympic National Winter Games in 2004.
"Now we must begin the task of preparing to host the 2004 winter games," says Minister Shea. "As I am sure the athletes can all attest to, it will mean some very hard work but it will reap wonderful rewards for Prince Edward Island as well as our Island athletes."
