Everyone loves lists, and Prince Edward Island tourism is counting on that passion with the release of their latest promotional piece. Your Room Is Ready lists 59 reasons (of at least a thousand) to visit the Island this year. The 40-page insert will be distributed with the May 16 issue of seven Maritime papers including the Halifax Chronicle Herald and Mail Star, the Cape Breton Post, the Moncton Times Transcript and the Saint John Telegraph Journal.
One of the most immediate and obvious reasons to visit the Island this year is the upcoming BridgeFest '97 celebration marking the opening of the Confederation Bridge. Set for the June 1 weekend, the event has lined up some big-name performers, as well as an excellent schedule of family entertainment.
"We think that BridgeFest '97 will be a once-in-a-lifetime type of celebration for many Maritimers," says Frank Butler, Chief Operating Officer at Tourism PEI. "We all have fond memories of past Marine Atlantic crossings, as well as great anticipation for this whole new era of the Confederation Bridge. BridgeFest '97 will prove to be a fitting way to mark both."
Tourism operators in PEI are encouraging Maritimers to book their accommodations now. While there are plenty of rooms as of the first of May, they are expecting many Maritimers to visit during the BridgeFest '97 weekend.
The promotional piece builds a good case for an Island vacation at any time of year; suggestions with headings like Live, eat and breathe golf, Beaches as plentiful as the sea and A new star in the west should be enough to attract visitors from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia to come over again this year to their favourite holiday destination.
"Some folks in neighbouring provinces may have the impression that it will be too busy on the Island this year," says Gerry Gallant, President of the Tourism Industry Association of PEI, "but we want to assure them that we are ready and waiting with lots of great festivals, new theatre and music productions and of course all kinds of accommodations."
