Students, teachers, parents, community members, and representatives of the Western School Board and the provincial government participated in the official ground breaking ceremony at Kinkora Regional High School this afternoon. Work begins on the $3.5 million addition and renovation project later this month.

Premier Pat Binns participated in the sod turning ceremony and said the project illustrates government's continued commitment to education and Island communities.

"We are pleased to be in Kinkora this afternoon to realize our commitment to this school community," said Premier Binns. "The new addition and renovations to the existing school will provide students, teachers and the community with a vastly improved learning environment."

The capital construction project includes an addition which will house a new gymnasium, administrative offices and a new soccer field. Renovation work in the existing school includes upgrades to classrooms, offices and the science lab, as well as a new computer room, two-story multi-purpose room/cafeteria with a kitchen and a new library.

The Honourable Jeffrey E. Lantz, Minister of Education, said the project involved the cooperation and dedication of many partners, including the community and the Western School Board.

"This is an historic day for the Kinkora school community," said Minister Lantz. "All of the project's partners have worked hard to see this project get underway. The new gymnasium, combined with the substantial improvements in the existing school facility will improve the learning and teaching environment at this school."

The Government of Prince Edward Island began its Capital Construction and Renovation Plan for school in 1997/98. The plan is a multi-year strategy to enhance the infrastructure of 10 Island schools and also provide for the on-going capital maintenance of all Island schools.

Speaking on behalf of the Western School Board, Chairperson Lorraine Robinson said, "After many years of patiently waiting, it is with great pleasure that on behalf of the Board, I express our thanks for the carrying out of the

committment of Premier Binns and his government. The addition and renovations will serve the Kinkora and surrounding communities for many years to come. Education has always been the heart of this community and the completion of this project will enhance and compliment what is already being provided."

School Principal Brenda Millar said the students at the grade 9-12 school were pleased to participate in the ground breaking ceremony.

"Students, staff and parents have been anxiously waiting for this day," said Ms. Millar. "We know that the new gymnasium and renovations will enhance our rural school spirit."

The architect for the project is Guimond and Associates. The general contractor is Fitzgerald and Snow.
