The Honourable Chester Gillan, Minister of Education, spoke on "Providing Students With a Quality Education" as guest speaker of the School-to-Work Institute hosted by the Eastern School District this evening.
"I believe there are two major components in a quality education," said Minister Gillan. "The first of these is the knowledge content and classroom theory we offer our students. The second is the practical application of this content and theory in life beyond the classroom."
The Minister of Education was recognized at the Institute for being a pioneer of the School-to-Work project on Prince Edward Island. In addition, his work in developing "hands-on" learning opportunities for his students and integrating employable skills within curriculum while at Charlottetown Rural were acknowledged.
"My overall priority is the delivery of quality education to our youth so they are adequately equipped to make meaningful contributions to society," said Minister Gillan.
In his speech, the Minister of Education also emphasized moving beyond the classroom to maximize learning opportunities, embracing technology, and adjusting teaching practices to prepare students for their future in the workplace.
The Institute will continue on Tuesday, April 29, 1997 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The School-to-Work Transition Project represents a partnership of schools, businesses and industry groups whose objective is to promote employable skills, including science and technology, within Island schools.
