New Gymnasium Officially Opened at Parkdale Elementary School

The new $1.27 million addition to Parkdale Elementary School was officially opened today by students, staff, parents, Eastern School District representatives and government officials.

"The new gymnasium at Parkdale Elementary illustrates government's commitment to Island schools and communities," said Premier Pat Binns, who attended the official opening earlier this afternoon. "We know that successful learning environments consist of much more than physical structures – the attitudes and commitment of students and teachers are paramount to successful schools. We also know that the students and staff at Parkdale exemplify strong school spirit. This new addition will enhance that spirit."

The Government of Prince Edward Island began its Capital Construction Plan for schools in 1997/98. The plan is a multi-year strategy to enhance the infrastructure of 10 Island schools and provide for the on-going capital maintenance of all schools in PEI.

The new addition at Parkdale Elementary is approximately 6670 square feet. It consists of a new gymnasium, gym equipment storage area, chair storage areas, community storage area, physical education instructor's office, washrooms and change rooms, a mezzanine for a new fan room and a new connecting link to the existing school. Within the existing school, a new sprinkler system was installed as well as a new fire alarm system, new lighting and ceilings. Staff and visitor parking and bus access were improved along with site storm water drainage.

The Honourable Jeffrey E. Lantz, Minister of Education, also participated in the official opening.

"It is evident that students, staff and community members are pleased with the new addition," said Minister Lantz. "The new gym will offer improved learning and recreational opportunities and enhance an already strong school community spirit in the Parkdale area."

Prior to the new gym being built, students attended physical education classes at Park Royal United Church. Ann Ledgerwood, principal of the school, said the school community appreciated the generosity of the congregation at Park Royal.

"Parkdale Elementary has a strong commitment to athletics and sports," said Ms. Ledgerwood. "This new addition has long been a goal for both our staff and the community at large."

Speaking on behalf of the Eastern School District, Board Chairperson, Robert Clow, noted, "This new gym and other upgrades at the school provide our students and staff with an improved learning and working environment."

The architect for the construction project was WD Lawrence Architecture Inc. The general contractor was Maclean Construction Ltd.
